December 1880

Dear Bertha

I thought as I was writing to you all that it would be too bad to forget you, so I send you this little note. I hope your visit to Detroit has done you a great deal of good. My! You are quite a traveller. Just think! Been in the United States indeed. A pretty State things are coming to when little girls four yrs. old travel about.

I will forgive you if you write a letter to me about what you have seen. Can you read writing, yes? I expect your aunt Rebecca will send your mama a picture which the editors of the graphic have put in their paper of you. What did Santa Claus send you this winter, some sweets I’ll be bound.

Has Santa been to see you […] him? I suppose it is not too late to say “merry Christmas (I’ll try to fill the page) and a Happy Newyear”
